Writing Life

Working on my next novel

I don’t expect to finish this novel anytime soon. I have vowed to only work on it on the weekends, as spending time on it during the week makes it very difficult to focus on my day job. It’s amazing how you can be so sucked into your story, that it can monopolize your brain so distinctly that nothing else around you can get the attention it deserves. For that reason, I have made the difficult decision of writing my book only on the weekends, knowing full well that it will take much longer to finish.

I spent some time writing it today. I am still pleased with it, although it is nothing like any of my other works. This book is a mystery, following a detective that is leading us to an unknown conclusion at the moment.

When I write, I don’t like to plan things out. Instead I write what comes to me at the moment and let it sort of write itself. I am very much in the early stages of writing, still working on chapter one, but I want this book to be the first in a series of mystery books following this detective as he works his magic. It’s more rugged than my previous novels, definitely darker as well.

I have a working title, “Murder at Howler’s Point,” a Detective Aubry Bird Mystery, but that may change down the road. It’s a thriller/mystery, and I can’t wait until I get further into it. Although, it’s fair to say I lose myself in my novel when I am writing it, so hopefully, I can find my way out okay.

I have been reading a lot of mystery/thriller novels lately to help with the kind of tone I want to use, and how I want my setting to stand out from others. My Detective has a few quirks that come out right away, they challenge him to work harder than the other police and he is constantly proving himself.
