Today I had the honor of observing
Your creativity and with it your perfectionism
Your joy in creating marred slightly
With the thick scrub of the eraser
I gently reminded you that things don’t need to be perfect
To sketch lightly, and remember that painting outside of the lines
Is not only allowed, but often beautiful
Your determination and will so strong
That I thought the pencil might just break
In the end the beauty of your creation showed
A passion to please. To be the best.
To shine brighter than the brightest star.
I admired your work, stunned not by the
Paint before me, rather by the look in of
Sheer joy and determination that resonated
In your eyes. Three sets of eyes
Shined up at me today all resilient boys
Under the age of ten. Each one with a future
Bright ahead of them - unknown, and yet
They face it fearlessly, with joy and curiosity
Chasing a perfection that one day they will
Learn to let go of, accepting reality just as they blend
And push water and ink around the page.
I can’t wait to watch them grow.
