With fists of stone, I throw a punch
My aim off kilter, and the strength
Ebbs from my fingertips, as my hand open-
Palms his cheek until it becomes a caress.
He carries the jar with a skull and crossbones
But I carry a heart heavy with love
I drink from the hot liquid, prideful and
It coats my throat, choking me until I stand
Alone and frozen.
Remember who you are.
A tiny voice inside whispers, growing
Louder and I run to the bathroom,
Retching. Memories pour from my lips
Find yourself.
My broken heart begins to heal
As the poison leaves my body
Love burns and I flush it down the toilet
Where it Becomes history
Love should not encompass me so.
My eyes clear as the rum runs out.
I grow up, and the old adage that stems
From deep within fades,
I am worth more
Sober than drunk.
